About AAHP

The Association of Allied Health Professionals (AAHP) represents a thriving, diverse community of skilled professionals who provide exceptional patient care and advocate for a stronger public healthcare system. Our members are leaders and champions, dedicated to transforming and upholding a progressive, accessible healthcare system that enhances the well-being and quality of life for all.

The AAHP is a progressive healthcare union representing more than 850 unique and distinct health professionals across 25+ specialized occupations in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through solidarity and advocacy, we work to ensure our members receive the pay, benefits, and working conditions they deserve—empowering them to thrive in their workplaces, homes, and communities. We achieve this by:

  • Protecting the rights and interests of all members
  • Fostering meaningful engagement and inclusion in all union activities
  • Providing high-quality support, services, and representation
  • Negotiating and upholding fair, respectful, and equitable collective agreements
  • Elevating awareness and recognition of Allied Health Professionals’ value and contributions
  • Building strong partnerships to drive positive change in healthcare
  • Advocating for policies and practices that enhance patient care and professional excellence
  • Cultivating strong, values-based leadership within our organization

Founded in 1975 by 91 Allied Health Professionals, AAHP was established to represent professionals in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, dietetics, and social work. Recognizing their shared community of interest with each other based on their training, certification and professional ethics, they formed an independent union to advocate for their unique needs. Key milestones:

  • August 1975 – The Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Relations Board formally certifies AAHP as a bargaining agent.
  • Growth & Expansion – AAHP continues to evolve, now representing 850+ members across 25+ allied health professions.
  • A Union of Integrity – Today, AAHP is known for its credibility, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to members.

AAHP is a proud affiliate of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour (NLFL), which represents over 70,000 workers across 30 affiliated unions in the province. Through this partnership, we advocate for:

  • Stronger labour laws and fair workplace policies
  • Accessible, high-quality public services
  • A progressive society where no one is left behind

AAHP also collaborates with fellow unions and stakeholders to drive positive change for all workers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
